The Moment My Life Shifted - How I Found Strength in the Midst of Fear and Uncertainty

A personal journey through fear, resilience, and healing.

I will never forget the day everything changed. It was a regular evening in May 2022, and I was lying in bed, watching TV, when something made me stop.

Absentmindedly, I ran my hand across my breast checking for lumps and felt it- something unfamiliar, something hard.

At first, I tried to brush it off, thinking, “It’s probably nothing.” I had just had a clear mammogram a few months before, so I reassured myself there was no way it could be anything serious. But the next morning, in the shower, I felt it again, and this time, I knew I had to get it checked out.

Fear gripped me, not just because of the lump, but because of the timing. It had taken me years to build up the courage to leave my 33-year marriage, and here I was, finally on the verge of breaking free, only to be faced with a new, terrifying uncertainty.

How could this happen now, when I was trying to rebuild? The fear of not knowing what was ahead—whether in my health or my personal life—was overwhelming.

But in that moment of fear, a quiet voice inside reminded me that I had come this far, and I was stronger than I realized. I had faced difficult decisions before, and I could face this too. Despite the uncertainty, I knew I had to act, and that strength, though buried beneath the fear, would guide me through.

Despite the fear and uncertainty, I knew I had to take the next step…

The fear of not knowing what’s next is as paralyzing as the diagnosis itself.

The fear of not knowing what’s next is as paralyzing as the diagnosis itself.

The Fear of Diagnosis: What They Don’t Tell You

What no one really tells you is that the fear doesn’t just come from thinking, “Do I have cancer?”

It’s deeper than that. It’s the overwhelming reality that everything could change, that life as you know it might be over.

It’s wondering how much more you can take, how one person can handle both the emotional wreckage of a marriage ending and the very real possibility of a life-threatening illness.

I felt like I was on a runaway train, unable to control any part of my life.

My marriage was collapsing, and now I was staring at the possibility of losing my health, too.

What they don’t tell you is that the fear of a diagnosis isn’t just about the illness – it’s about losing control of every part of your existence.

Taking Action: The First Step

I called my doctor the next day and made an appointment. I remember feeling a strange sense of control amidst all the chaos.

On May 9th,2022 I walked into my doctor’s office, feeling a mix of fear and determination. I told her about the lump, and to my relief, she took me seriously right away. By May 19th, 2022 I was at the hospital for my first diagnostic mammogram, and soon after that, an ultrasound. Each step felt like walking through a fog, but at least I was moving forward.

I clung to that small bit of control—the idea that taking action, no matter how frightening, was better than waiting in silence. I knew that confronting my fears head-on was the only way forward, both in terms of my health and my crumbling marriage.

Letter to My Past Self: The Strength You Don’t Know You Have

Dear Abi,

I know you’re terrified right now. You’ve just found the lump, and your mind is racing. You’re trying to figure out how you can deal with this on top of everything else. I know you’re asking, “Why me? Why now?”

I want to remind you of something: you are stronger than you think. Right now, you feel like your world is falling apart—your marriage is ending, your home is being sold, and now this. But I promise you, you will find a strength you didn’t know you had.

You’re about to walk through some of the hardest days of your life, but you’ll also discover something beautiful: resilience. Even on the days when you feel like giving up, you will find a way to keep going. You will face this head-on, and even though it’s terrifying, you will get through it.

Keep moving forward, even when it feels impossible. You have so much more strength than you know.

Love,

Your future self
